In July 2010, I graduated with my Master’s in Education. I was very happy. I accomplished something that I wasn’t sure that I would ever do.  And then I said, “No more! I am done!”  Flash forward to Spring 2013,  and I was applying to grad school again.

There are a few reasons why I have decided to go back. I haven’t had the greatest luck with teaching. Now, I have many things I am proud of as a teacher. I have helped a lot of students do better in school and raised test scores, but I have not been able to stay in one place. When I completed my Master’s, I had just been laid off for the second time in two years. I have been in six schools in my six and a half-year career. I just don’t seem to fit in at some places or the budget affects my position.  Either way, I have made a difference at those schools. I am a “Mary Poppins.”

Anyway, I love teaching, but I feel my path is taking me to a different career in education. So what does that mean for my new foray into grad school? Well, I am going back to become a specialist in Instructional Technology. I love teaching in the classroom, but I am also very interested in the future of online education and curriculum design. I am excited to study this field and hopefully become more of an expert in it. I really want to help change education with my new degree. I know that I may not do it on a national or global scale, but I hope to help locally.

Face it. As professionals, we have to help our students and ourselves become fluent in the ever-changing world of technology. We cannot escape it. My program is 100% online. My husband is starting his Master’s in Library Science online, and he wants to focus on libraries becoming more available on the internet. My baby sister had semi-flipped classes in high school and will definitely take classes that are either partially or fully online when she starts college in a few weeks. I want to be a part of the new world.

As of right now, I am unemployed. Believe me, I am actively looking for work, but I will start my program at the end of August. I hope to finish by the end of 2014 so we will see where this will take me. Until then, I will be online, researching the new uses of technology in education, and seeing how I can make it better.[/fusion_builder_column][/fusion_builder_row][/fusion_builder_container]
