It’s the summer and many teachers are thankful for a short break to recalibrate and refocus for the upcoming school year. We are no longer confined to using the restroom in under 30 seconds or eating lunch in 20 minutes. We have actual time to plan and execute our plans for the upcoming year. Despite the longer days and warm weather,  for many teachers, the summer can be a difficult time because you may have to find a part-time job to make ends meet.  Or you could be searching for a way to utilize your talents to save more money for retirement.

Aside from starting a Teachers Pay Teachers store, what are some other ways for teachers to earn money from their home? Here are some ways (with examples) for teachers to earn a few more dollars to pay off some bills from the school year:

Start a blog. In 2016, there are millions of blogs that focus on a variety of things from education to photography to cooking. With so many blogs there are teachers (Cornerstone for Teachers, Pinch of Yum, etc.)  just like us who have been able to make a sizeable income from blogging.  So why not take your passion and blog about it for the world to read? According to Hubspot, blogs have been rated as the 5th most trusted source for accurate online information.

Starting a blog can be done in under a day and is a great way for you to engage in what you love to do. Start with selecting a platform, buying a domain name, finding a theme, and then writing. Blogging takes time and you might not make your first dollar for a while, but the more people who read your blog, the better you become at creating a niche for yourself.

Open an Etsy store. A couple of years ago, I had never even heard of Etsy but with birth of Pinterest ,I have  a new appreciation for the creatives who create. You can buy everything on Etsy ranging from custom shirts to necklaces and baby clothes. To sell products on Etsy, you have to have some creative talent and a way to reproduce, but I know a lot of sellers are teachers.

Create a tee-shirt line for teachers. In 2016 we all love a snarky shirt that we can wear on Fridays, but did you know it’s really easy to start a shop of your own? Even if you do not have the capital to mass produce a thousand shirts, there are services that will do it on-demand with no cost (minus logo) for you to create. Start with one design and test it to see how your teacher friends love it and then get to creating!

Create a tutoring business. During the summer, I always come across parents who are trying to get their child either caught up (or ahead) from the previous school year. They’ve tried to use study packets and/or workbooks, but they really need the expertise of a teacher to help their child. This is always a great way to make some extra money while using your expertise to help a child.  Many times the tutoring business can move over into the school year.

Open up a summer camp for kids in your neighborhood. When my two children were younger, I enrolled them in an in-home preschool from a former PreK teacher who needed  a job more flexible than the school system. She used the entire downstairs of her home for the school and when she expanded, she converted her garage into an extension of her school. What was so cool was that she had 10 kids and she still had time to be a parent for her children- all while making a great income. She charged a little bit cheaper than the traditional daycares in the area, but on average parents paid $125 a week per child!  in

If you’re a teacher who focuses on younger children, this may be a great move for you to make- if you have the space and time. It’s particularly hard for parents to find quality summer camps for their kids and most camps can’t brag that their “teachers” are certified. While there’s  an initial cost for licensing, the benefits could quickly outweigh the negative aspects.

Apply to work at a virtual school for their summer session. Virtual schools are all the “rage” right now in education and one of their benefits is that you can work from home- with full benefits. A good way to increase money is to apply to work in their virtual summer program. You may have between 10-15 students in your class, but it’s all virtual learning so we hope that it would be easier than working a traditional summer school.

A simple Google search for “virtual schools” will bring up hundreds of options for you to attempt to gain employment with!

Are there any extra ways that you can think for teachers to earn extra money this summer?
