See other teachers in action. I recently asked my school if I could be covered for a day so I can observe at a sister site. It was so refreshing and eye-opening to see other teachers, for a few reasons: they use different routines and structures in their classrooms, they enact a different teaching style, and (most importantly) they aren’t perfect. Now, I’ve really been needing this last point, as classroom-isolated-Me has veered on self-criticism over anything less than perfect. Observing veteran teachers not only shows me other ways to do things, but it also confirms that we’re all human – and that sometimes the best teacher is the one who can laugh at him or herself, and be willing to take risks and be vulnerable.
