In the season 3 opener of Abbott Elementary, we enter on career day and our regular characters doing what they usually do- operating school during chaos. However, this isn’t like any other regular episode of the blockbuster show stopped at the end of season 3 in April 2023. In the show timeline, five months have passed and our favorite characters are stepping into some regular and unexpected roles as the new school year starts.

Ava went to Harvard during the summer and got a degree in Education Connections. This has caused her to realize she hasn’t been a good principal and now she’s going “by the book”.

Jeanine now works for the school district- to Ava’s dismay- in a fellowship to bring new “ideas” to the district.
Gregory is still “Gregory” sharing side eyes with Jeanine and attempting to stay clear of Ava.

Melissa is still dating the guy from the neighborhood who helps her move things into her room while professing his love for her.

As Jeanine accepts her new district role, she works with three other “district staff” to help plan a better, more engaging Career Day for the students at Abbott Elementary School.

Not wanting it to be “boring” the district brings in heightened professionals to help the kids.

What could go wrong? Well, a lot.

The motley crew of characters consists of a botanist, a hairy stylist, Mr. Jones (the custodian)- who’s been a state legislator, and a “made” man in Italy- just to name a few. They also bring a Philadelphia Eagles marketing professional that while the kids somewhat enjoy there’s not a lot of excitement for the kids. All changes when the incomparable Jalen Hurts shows up to speak to the kids via Zoom. While Hurts only has 10 minutes for the kids, a lot happens.

While Barbara’s class is learning from a cosmetologist how to do their makeup, Barbara gets a makeover and promptly turns into a “new” woman. And next door Melissa is proposed to, it’s clear that this season of Abbott Elementary is going to be fast-paced- just like we like it!

The whole episode was the Abbott Elementary we all love- quirky characters all focused on doing what’s best for the kids.

In the end, teachers can take the following lessons from this combined episode:

  • Our school custodians are superstars. Mr. Jones had the entire class fascinated with all of the things he has done in his life. From being a state legislator to a “made man” in Italy, school custodians are rock stars.
  • Good teachers leave every day to work in the central office. Jeanine was conflicted about whether she should take the fellowship even when she went back to Abbott Elementary.
  • We like the “bad” Ava more than the one who follows the rules. I was bored when Ava wasn’t up to her regular antics. I was hollering when Juvenile Classic came on and the old Ava was back activated.
  • Trying new things can help teachers stay interested in our work. I love that Barbara decided to get the makeover and thought that the district staff may be able to do some good. Even Melissa took a stand when she declined her boyfriend’s marriage proposal.

In addition to the lessons, I also have some questions about this season of Abbott Elementary:

  • When are Jeanine and Gregory going to finally admit they are beyond smitten?
  • Since Ava has cooled on harassing Greg, who is her love interest this year?
  • What will Jacob do now that Jeanine is not in the building?
  • What will these three new characters from the district do?
  • What’s Melissa going to do without her handyman?
  • Will Barbara take Jeanine’s optimistic attitude this year?

Stay tuned for the next episode of Abbott Elementary this Wednesday night.
