2023: A Year in Education

2023: This year showcased both the peaks and valleys of our education, from banning books from Black LGBTQIA+ authors to issues of spending federal funds from COVID relief. From spirited school board races and the unrest in the Middle East to the controversy surrounding rewriting history in Florida around Advanced Placement Black History and discussions about innovating the teaching force, not to mention the impact of devastating mental health challenges of teachers and students — the events of 2023 were one for the record books. Here’s a reflection on all that the year brought- the positive, the challenging, and the newsworthy.

A Note from our Founder

Due to our support from readers, practitioners and advocates and the educators at The Educator’s Room , we have steadily expanded our reporting to offer both editorials and news pieces. We started our work at The Educator’s Room in 2012 at the height of Race to the Top when educators were struggling with the increased testing and accountablity measures inflicted on public schools. Since then, we’ve been able to bring a voice to education through our reporting on issues in education, producing podcasts, and curating events focused on teacher mental health. As we go into 2024, we are focused on expanding our reach by hiring more writers to cover benefits, producing more events and releasing our groundbreaking white paper on educator well-being.
