Stage 5 – Support

Students are writing daily, receiving less and less instruction and reminders from you about what to do. By writing daily, I do not mean writing full-fledged essays. Instead, I mean simply responding to text in something as simple as a paragraph. But the writing must match the mode you’re trying to teach. I like to have students write smaller responses to a big reading selection and then gather those responses into an essay at the end of the reading. Once the teacher feels that students can respond to the writing prompts independently, it is time to move on.
