For most of us in the United States, the time after Spring Break is for state testing and the time for meaningless presentations by educators to schools boards. So what was the problem this week at Philadelphia’s very own Abbott Elementary?

Principal Ava is out of her element in presenting to the public about what the school needs for them to receive discretionary funds.

To give some context on why this is so hard for a principal like Ava, let’s discuss what we know about reputation as a school leader:

  • She received the job after blackmailing the Superintendent and his affair.
  • Last year instead of giving her presentation, she did perform a “chopped and screwed” rendition of a popular song.
  • She’s used discretionary funds to put 16′ rims on a bus and put a life-size portrait of herself at the front of the school.
  • She’s named the school’s wifi as “Bad B***** Only.”

However, that’s just the start of Ava and her antics. After falling out of grace with the Superintendent, this year’s presentations are bound to go wrong- despite Janine and Gregory’s planning every part of the presentation for Principal Ava.

Just as we know, the presentation went horrible but not before Ava surprised us by standing up for the teachers at the school. But, what was the real shocker of the episode? Gregory alluded to going to Human Resources on Ava for harassing him.

What are the lessons in this episode?

  • Teachers always save the day in times of crunch in high-poverty schools.
  • School boards don’t know about the hard work in schools.
  • There’s usually super qualified staff who never get the chance to lead.
  • Sometimes there’s a bright spot where someone uses their power to give funds to a school that needs the resources.
