In a now-viral 4-minute clip, a male middle school teacher, Mr.Marquise White (TikTok: JaQ Lee), showed a clip on TikTok where four female students were taking down his braids. The video, live-streamed ten minutes before dismissal, was viewed over 14,000 times and shared all over Instagram, TikTok, and X—the video was an instant topic of conversation.

In the original TikTok video, the comments were mixed about the appropriateness of the video.

Comment 1: “I see nothing wrong. Some of them may not have a father figure or big brother at home so keep it up. Be there for them.”

“I love this, it’s community. It’s culture. It’s pure bonding.”

“Yeah nahh. This is wild.”

“Are the boundaries in the room with us.”

Mr. Lee gave three reasons why he had students take his hair down during class citing: an appointment right after school, it would have taken him too long. Therefore, he asked four of his “best friends” to help him. Lee, a science teacher who, according to his original video, was one of the students’ teachers when he was a substitute, spoke about how this same activity would not be a problem if he were a female teacher. White explained that some of the kids involved were not his students in his class that period, but he had given them passes to spend the end of the class period helping him.

On X (formerly known as Twitter), the comments are mixed.

“that teacher letting those students take down his hair shows me times have changed a lot because growing up the teachers WE had didn’t allow us behind their desk. that was an automatic no no zone so to see kids behind the desk and taking down hair is insane…”

Another X user lamented that there was even time for teachers to have students take down their hair and gave four examples of other teachers doing the same on social media.

“Why are we taking hair down in school? The wave of overwhelmed teachers complaining (rightfully so) about their students being completely remedial but y’all got time to take down HAIR??”

While others didn’t see the big deal and wanted the public to address other issues.

“Ion really see a problem. People making it weird imo. Shiddd if I were him I’d probably would’ve did the same thing, taking down hair be a pain in the ass lol + like he said, young black girls love hair & makeup, I’m sure they were pressed to help take down their teacher’s hair”

In a video posted four hours ago on TikTok, Mr. White read the messages sent to him after all the controversy. The messages were comforting, and White, who was visibly upset, stopped the video because he was tearing up.

We will update once we know the update from the school system on his employment.
