The Stress of IEP Preparation, Respect and More

  • Being told to take care of all these IEPs and no extra time to do so. Micromanaging and basically shooting me in the foot when I try to manage all of it. No communication from people in charge of me unless it’s to scold me for something.
  • I’m a first-year teacher, career changer from teaching in workforce development. There are so many reasons, here are just a few: Lack of training, lack of support, unrealistic observation expectations, no support when bad behaviors escalate. No communication or support from the administration. Under constant fear to speak out about these things but I’m working on leaving before the year ends.
  • We’re not respected as college-educated professionals. We are told by people (largely not involved in education) what our goals should be for the standard-issue American child. The thing is, we don’t have such a thing. So, we are told how to mold and form it to get the result “they” want.
  • It’s the politics! I’ve been totally discarded in the name of “who you know”. In addition, the culture of apathy. Most, not all students don’t care, put forth little effort, and God forbid you to correct them because the parents will slander you all over social media. Then we hand our career over to them for state testing each spring! They can have phones and video in your class while you’re trying to teach. I’m a 20-year veteran. I love teaching and love my students, but the day I turn 60, God willing, I’ll retire.
  • Education is sorely in need of a complete overhaul. Some of the things we do in the name of educating children and young adults is irrelevant and outdated. Teachers feel this most acutely. We’re tired of it. And leaving the profession because of it.
