flusteredteacher5. Let the coach know the play ahead of time. Who would you rather hear from first on an issue–you, or the parent who is giving you a hard time? I have made a habit of putting difficult students and parents on my principal’s radar before the issue reaches his desk from someone else. That way, we can discuss possible solutions and stay on the same page. Sometimes the issue will still reach him, but often this prevents it from even getting that far.

Remember, there are no prizes for winning an argument. Our students are our priority and should always be. Ask yourself who wins if you do, and if the answer is “just me”, finish the argument with your journal or your spouse, maybe over a glass of wine.
